A MASTERPLAN TO REGENERATE BOLOGNA HISTORIC CENTER
Ascom-Bologna presents the new masterplan for the historic center in occasion of the International Conference "The Renaissance of The city" at Salone De' Carracci, Strada Maggiore 23, Bologna.
.

.

The masterplan systematically analyzes the main features of commercial spaces in the metropolitan area from a typological and morphological point of view. This operation underlines their fundamental role in the actual process of both architectural re-qualification of historic edifices and urban redevelopment of ill-conceived sub-urban areas, and lead towards the design of an architectural strategy for interventions of re-urbanization based upon the use of the commercial spaces -markets buildings, squares, arcades, etc.- as key elements for the creation of a better urban environment.

How to Save the Suburbs:
Solutions from the Man Who
Saw the Whole Thing Coming

The suburbs are really suffering. -What’s the short-form diagnosis?
-So where’s the bottom? Or, rather: Is there a bottom?
-How long will it take for supply and demand to get back into equilibrium?
-How can a suburb save itself?

Bad News for Stararchitects
Good News for The City:
The Party is Over

Just in the same way that the excessive eclecticism of the 20's and 30's was identified with the financial excesses preceding the Great Depression, Stararchitects and Starchitecture are now clearly identified with the mad off of the last twenty years.
Even Nicolai Ouroussoff admits it in a well hidden article in the NY Times (2008, December 21): Arts and Leisure Section, page 27, "It was fun till the money run out".
There will be no more extravagant programs, extravagant budgets, extravagant forms or any other form of excess in architecture and urbanism for many years to come. The party is over. Good bye cynicism, irony, megalomania, egocentricity, arbitrariness, and chaos. […]
We must now focus on making clear to the world that what we have been advocating for two decades, a socially, economically and physically sustainable architecture and urbanism, is the way of the future.
Silence in the light of this immense opportunity is a betrayal of all that the new urbanism stands for. […] Paraphrasing Churchill in 1942, Ladies and Gentlemen, we are out of allies, territory, resources and hope. It is time to think! (and to act)
(Thank's to Stefanos Polyzoides)

OBAMA DECLARES END
TO SUBURBAN SPRAWL

The Presidential Proclamations

http://www.infrastructurist.com
Days of Building Sprawl Are Over.
Urban planning is the most important step in reducing our energy consumption. This is what Obama said during a town hall forum in Ft. Myers, Florida.
Was one of the tipping points for the current financial crisis a combination of high oil prices and suburban sprawl leading to an implosion in housing at the suburban fringe?

Rumors On Crisis of the Skyscrapers Projects in Milan

As it happend for Moscow towers, according to many real-estate agencies, the projects for the famous VIAGRA towers in Milan might be stopped because of the economical crisis.
More than 79% of the office space is still empty. More about skyscrapers.
Did a combination of rising transportation costs coupled with adjustable rate mortgage resets become the perfect storm for household budgets at the outer limits of a daily commute? Peter Newman, author of Resilient Cities makes the case that sub-prime loans combined with our sprawling patterns of development are part of the toxic soup that helped to create our current economic crisis.
In the age of cheap oil, driving out from the city until you could afford the mortgage payment seduced families into the great suburban experiment of post WWII America. Fueled by cheap gas and government subsidized water, sewer, power, and highway infrastructure investments, the early promise of suburban home ownership devolved into mind-numbing commutes and complete auto dependency. In many suburban developments, household transportation costs came to exceed healthcare, food, and in some cases housing costs.
Just because Obama made some remark about sprawl doesn't mean its gonna be stopped. We hope that Obama Urban background will help us.
