Transforming the sub-urban
peripheries in livable neighborhoods is the challenge that faces the
European Union in the anniversary of the French riots. The International Workshop organized by CivicArch with the collaboration of A Vision of Europe and the support of MIUR-PRIN 2004, aims at providing architects, engineers, urbanists, public and private administrators, public and private developers, real estate agencies with the most recent experiences of transformation of problematic sub-urban areas into true livable communities according to the principles of New Urbanism. |

States, the New Urbanism has been defined by the New York Times "the
most relevant collective architectural endeavour in the last 50 years". |

The workshop will be organized with the participation of leading figures of the New Urbanism such as GALINA TAHCHIEVA, Director at Duany & Plater-Zyberk (DPZ)-the practice that has produced more than 150 plans for new towns and villages- , CHARLES BOHL, director of the Knight Program in Community Building (Knight Program)at the University of Miami School of Architecture, and MAURICE CULOT, urban consultant for the French Minister Jean Louis Borloo. |

Trasformare le
periferie sub-urbane in quartieri vivibili è la sfida che l'Unione
Europea ha di fronte un anno dopo le rivolte nelle periferie francesi. Il workshop internazionale organizzato da CivicArch con la collaborazione di A Vision of Europe e il sostegno del MIUR-PRIN 2004, si prefigge lo scopo di fornire ad architetti, ingegneri, amministratori pubblici e privati, promotori immobiliari pubblici e privati, società immobiliari, le più recenti esperienze di trasformazione di aree sub-urbane degradate in quartieri vivibili secondo i principi del New Urbanism, attraverso un seminario di aggiornamento e formazione professionale. |

| Sorto all'inizio
degli anni '90 negli Stati Uniti, il New Urbanism è stato definito
dal New York Times "il più importante fenomeno architettonico
degli ultimi 50 anni". Dalla fondazione della città di Seaside nel Golfo del Messico, sono oggi centinaia le nuove città, distretti, borghi e villaggi realizzati in tutto il mondo secondo i principi del New Urbanism. Convinto della necessità di avviare una radicale riforma del sistema di pianificazione che ha portato al disastro ambientale ed economico delle periferie sub-urbane, il New Urbanism sviluppa una strategia globale per il recupero dei centri urbani degradati e la trasformazione delle aree periferiche in quartieri urbani: il TRADITIONAL NEIGHBORHOOD DESIGN. Oggi, attraverso il programma HOPE, il New Urbanism è diventato legge ufficiale degli Stati Uniti e ogni nuovo intervento di edilizia economica popolare deve soddisfare la NU check-list per poter ottenere il finanziamento del governo. Tra gli interventi più spettacolari del New Urbanism, i progetti per la ricostruzione delle città e dei villaggi devastati dall'uragano Katrina in corso di realizzazione lungo le coste del Golfo del Messico. |

coste del Golfo del Messico su incarico del Governatore del Mississippi
e coordinatore di un gruppo di oltre 100 architetti, esporrà
le linee guida e le tecniche di intervento che stanno portando a compimento
la colossale opera di rinascita.
