RECONQUERING SACRED SPACE

Riscoprire la tradizione nellArchitettura Liturgica del XX Secolo

Questa iniziativa, attraverso i progetti e le realizzazioni di alcuni degli architetti cattolici più rappresentativi nel panorama architettonico internazionale, e con il preziosissimo contributo di artisti di fede ortodossa, si propone di evidenziare gli aspetti più versatili dell'architettura tradizionale classica nella costruzione di edifici liturgici, e la sua adattabilità tanto ai mutamenti funzionali e tecnici quanto alle trasformazioni politiche, sociali e religiose, valutando se oggi sia ancora possibile operare una scelta di linguaggio che, anche in ambito liturgico, possa offrire una reale opportunità di riqualificazione urbana e di valorizzazione ambientale e storica delle nostre città.

Liniziativa è promossa dalla Associazione Culturale "Agenzia per la Città", in collaborazione con il Centro Studi IL BOSCO E LA NAVE, l'Università cattolica di NOTRE DAME, School of Architecture, e l'Institute of Sacred architecture di Notre Dame.

This initiative, highlighting the projects of internationally known Catholic architects, along with the contribution of Orthodox artists, demonstrates the versatility of the classical tradition in the construction of contemporary liturgical buildings, and its adaptability to liturgical and technical changes. It also indicates the possibility of employing traditional architectural languages today which, along with the liturgy, can support genuine urban revitalization and the environmental and historical valorization of our cities.

The debate between a recovery of tradition and opening up to the "modern" does not have to be reduced to a simplistic debate between "conservatives " and " progressives ". It has a profound and extreme dignity because it calls upon the Church - the community of believers - to deliberate on how to be a "sign" of hope to the world.

The initiative is being organized by the Cultural Association "Agency for the City", in collaboration with the Study Center "Il Bosco e la Nave", the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture, and the Institute for Sacred Architecture.

LA MOSTRA / THE EXHIBITION

L'esposizione si terrà a Roma presso la Sala "Borromini" in Piazza della Chiesa Nuova, 18 dal 09 (giorno dell'inaugurazione) al 22 Ottobre 1999.

Essa raccoglierà progetti e opere di architetti come Hamilton Reed Armstrong, Maxim Atayants, Andrea Baciarlini, Sandro Benedetti, Beyer Binder Belle architects, Piotr Choynowsky, Jose Cornelio Da Silva, Javier Cotelo, Anthony Delarue, Camillian Demetrescu, John Dinkeloo, Francesco Saverio & Stefano Fera, Thomas Gordon Smith, Frederick Hart, Santiago Hernandez, Keefe Associates, Michael G. Imber, Alla Lebedeva, Roxolana Luczakowsky, Jan Maciag, David Mayernik, Ettore Maria Mazzola, Henry Menzies, Vasile Mutu, Helmut Peuker, Kevin Roche, Cristiano Rosponi, Steven Semes, Steven Schloeder, Arne Sodal, Duncan G. The exhibition of new sacred architecture will be held in Rome in the historic Sala "Borromini" within the Oratory of the Filippini located in the piazza of the Chiesa Nuova from the 9th to 22nd of October 1999.

Il Convegno si propone di stimolare un dibattito interdisciplinare di vasta portata che coinvolga, accanto ad architetti e urbanisti, storici dell'arte, studiosi di simbolica cristiana, storici delle religioni, filosofi, artisti e teologi, al fine di dimostrare il ruolo fondamentale dell'edificio-chiesa nella conformazione di spazi sociali di qualità. Parteciperanno al dibattito Andrea Baciarlini, Sandro Benedetti, Carlo Fabrizio Carli, Camilian Demetrescu, Duncan G. Stroik e altri.

NELL'ARCHITETTURA LITURGICA DEL XX SECOLO

L’esposizione sarà accompagnata da un catalogo edito dall’editrice IL BOSCO E LA NAVE, nelle lingue italiana e inglese di 150 pagine, contenente circa 150 illustrazioni a colori diviso in due sezioni: la prima conterrà una serie di relazioni; la seconda presenterà i progetti di architettura sacra diviso per autori. Il catalogo conterrà testi di Sandro Benedetti, Camilian Demetrescu, Cristiano Rosponi, Giampaolo Rossi, Gabriele Tagliaventi e altri.

REDISCOVERING TRADITION
IN 20TH CENTURY LITURGICAL ARCHITECTURE

The exhibition will be accompanied by a 150 page catalogue published in Italian and English by "Il Bosco e la Nave". It will contain approximately 150 color illustrations of new Catholic churches from all over the world. The first half of the catalogue will be devoted to essays on the subject by architects and scholars while the second section will exhibit photographs and descriptive texts by each of the architects. The catalog will contain essays by Giampaolo Rossi, Sandro Benedetti, Camilian Demetrescu, Christiano Rosponi, Duncan G. Stroik, Gabriel Tagliaventi and others. The catalogue can be ordered in advance from "Il Bosco e la Nave".
