TOUR AND INTERNATIONAL CHARRETTE
The Cuban and Norwegian chapters of C.E.U. - Council for European Urbanism - invite you to join a one week tour of three Cuban cities and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Havana, Cienfuegos and Trinidad, 24 February - 3 March 2007. The tour will be followed by a one week charrette in Old Havana and the neighboring town of Casablanca, 4 - 10 March 2007. You are welcome to join one of the events, or both.

Who is it for: Architects, planners, art historians, antiquarians, writers and others with an interest in the history of Cuban architecture, urbanism and culture.

Tour: The one week Tour February 24 - March 3 will include an introduction to the history of urbanism and architecture in Havana, and the regeneration of Old Havana. One day tours by bus to two smaller historic towns, Trinidad and Cienfuegos. Our expert guide will be Prof. Julio Cesar Perez, Faculty of Architecture, Havana. Prof. Perez has been a speaker at several INTBAU and C.E.U. conferences. He is a Loeb Fellow at Harvard Graduate School of Design 2001-2002 and adjunct professor at the School of Architecture in Havana, has lectured widely in the US and Europe about Cuban architecture.

Charrette: International architects and planners are invited to join Cuban experts and local communities for a one week Charrette Workshop March 4 - 10 to develop ideas for the development of the waterfront sector of the Old Havana Harbor, and for Casablanca, a small marine town across from Old Havana with 5,000 inhabitants, founded in 1780.

SUBDIVIDED
Isolation and Community in America

Subdivided is a documentary film about life in contemporary suburbia: a personal study of isolation and the struggle to find and maintain community in an era of careless development, the uninspired design of the modern subdivision, urban sprawl, and the invasion of the McMansion.
American life is more divisive than ever, and poorly designed neighborhoods further encourage isolation and separation. With no sense of place or belonging, is this the new American Dream?
The film is written and directed by Dean Terry and features interviews with Andres Duany, James Howard Kunstler and Robert Putnam, with aerial photos by Jim Wark.
Andres Duany looked at these structures below:
"it couldn't have taken more than 15 minutes
to design the whole facade."

Quotes from Subdivided interviewees (©http://www.pegasusnews.com):
JAMES HOWARD KUNSTLER
ON THE CURRENT STATE OF SUBURBIA: "It's a cartoon of country life in a cartoon of a country house. The dirty secret of it is it's very disappointing. It's less clear where 'home' is. We live our lives in big triangles (going from home to work to shopping areas), and the triangles have gotten much larger."
