The New Town at Liberty will offer
the charm of pre-World War II American towns and an alternative to
suburban sprawl, and could double Liberty's population.The development
will be a New Urbanist project — a throwback to prewar communities
with compact, pedestrian-centered neighborhoods, varied housing styles
and ample civic space. Although New Urbanism is inspired by traditional
neighborhoods — such as Brookside in Kansas City or Liberty’s
downtown square — it is still relatively rare in the Midwest,
where the conventional cul-de-sac-and-collector-street pattern dominates
residential development.

The new annual ULI European Student
Urban Design Competition is intended to promote an interdisciplinary
approach to urban design and development problems, while encouraging
cooperation and teamwork among future real estate professionals and
the many allied professions, such as architecture, landscape architecture,
urban planning, historic preservation, engineering, real estate development,
finance, and others.

Each year a large-scale site will be
chosen in an urban regeneration area located in Europe. These sites
will present complex challenges, needing practicable, innovative solutions
that reflect responsible land use. The solutions are to be multifaceted,
incorporating design, planning, market potential and feasibility,
and development strategies. The submission to the competition will
