International conference - Ischia, Naples, June 15-16, 2007
GREAT SUCCESS !

Ischia,International Conference, Session I
The Conference have systematically analyzed the main features of Traditional Architecture and Urban Fabric in the Mediterranean Area in relationship with a wider European context where the Region is recognized as the fundamental actor of a sustainable development in the Age of Globalization.
A development based upon the rational evolution of local architectural and urban types which are compatible with geographical and environmental elements.
Case Studies of towns and cities from a typological and morphological point of view -including 20th century architecture as part of the European tradition of building cities- were also been analyzed . This operation underlined their key role in the actual process of both architectural re-qualification of historic edifices and urban redevelopment of ill-conceived sub-urban areas and leaded towards the design of an Architectural Code for interventions of Re-urbanization based upon the use of Regional Architecture, and Traditional Urban Fabric as key element for the creation of a better urban environment in an age which has to face processes of intense standardization and reduction of architectural elements.

This was the program that MED-CITY International Association has launched in occasion of the III International Congress on Architecture and Building Technologies, together with A Vision of Europe, Fondation pour l'Architecture and the two University of Naples.
Architects, urbanists, engineers and professors came from EU and USA to give their contributions.
The traditional Mediterranean city, with its roads, its public realm, its blocks and with the net of pedestrian courts allows a great quality of life, not comparable to the periphery built in the second half of the last century.

Looking back towards Blair Hall

Walking towards Whitman
John Massengale recently had the pleasure of going on a tour of Whitman College.
"Whitman is part of the college system that Princeton is switching to, and part of the "Gothic zone" that's come in response to to Princeton's surveys of their freshman, asking where they would like to live. Overwhelmingly, the students wanted to live in the old buildings, not the Modernist ones Princeton has built for 50 years. So Princeton now has a policy of new Gothic colleges in the center of the campus, and a "free-style" zone around that: a Frank Gehry building is under construction there." (Veritas et Venustas blog)

THE CONFERENCE OF THE MONTH
History, Heritage & Regeneration
The future of traditional architecture in Eastern Europe
23-25 September 2007 / Sibiu - Transylvania, Romania
INTBAU Romania is very pleased to announce a major conference on Central and Eastern European heritage. The event will take place from 23 - 25 September in the city of Sibiu, one of the two Cultural Capitals of Europe in 2007. The conference aims to examine the challenges faced by the emerging economies of the former Eastern bloc in the field of heritage and preservation of traditional places.
Under communism, traditional architecture was almost entirely abandoned in Central and Eastern Europe in favour of the now infamous model of blocks of flats. Furthermore, beautiful classical buildings were demolished only to clear the ground for modernistic developments which fit the image of the "multilateral developed society" promoted by the communist regime. However, a number of World Heritage Sites throughout Central and Eastern Europe have survived communism.
The countries behind the "iron curtain" re-gained their freedom and returned to democracy after 1990. Most of the economies of Central and Eastern Europe are booming due to structural economic reforms and massive investments. However a number of places of heritage are still under threat because of the economic pressures to erect new buildings, often out of context in traditional environments and even protected areas.
INTBAU's conference will bring together strong voices from Romania and elsewhere in an effort to reinforce traditional architecture and urban design in Central and Eastern Europe. The event will present case studies of urban planning, housing design and heritage preservation from the region.

Following its independence from Spain in the 17th century, the Dutch Republic experienced an era of unprecedented wealth, the so-called 'Golden Age.'
Following its independence from Spain in the 17th century, the Dutch Republic experienced an era of unprecedented wealth, the so-called 'Golden Age.'
Thanks to the successful activities of its merchants and entrepreneurs - and in sharp distinction to the rest of Europe - a new middle-class elite emerged. Its members became the dominant force in local government and civic institutions, and as a result became the new principal patrons of the arts. Portraits were especially suitable to express their newly found self-confidence and desire for representation, and artists responded by developing new types of portraits to meet the demands of this clientele.
This exhibition is jointly organised with the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis (The Hague), and is the first international loan exhibition in 50 years to provide a survey of the unprecedented range and variety of painted portraiture in the Netherlands at this time.
It includes some 60 works, all painted between 1600 and 1680. Exhibits range from small, individual portraits meant for the private home to the large-scale group portraits of members of charitable institutions and civic guards.
