CITÉ JUDICIAIRE
Luxembourg, L ·since 1992

Rob Krier Christoph Kohl Architekten

department of justice · in construction

On the Holy Spirit Plateau on the edge of the old centre of Luxemburg, the design brings together the various departments of justice of the city as well as the country on the floor plan of a historic fortress by Vauban. Developed in conjunction with Léon Krier, this was achieved by proposing a new city quarter with streets, alleys and squares accessible to the public and by assigning the various departments to individual buildings. One of the registered buildings was gutted and integrated into the Tribunal d’Arrondissement (District Court). The ensemble fits in architectural and urban terms into the historical context.
In 2002, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee formally approved the project.

THE BOOK OF THE MONTH

THE BLACK TULIP

by Alexandre Dumas

Paperback: 262 pages

Publisher: Waking Lion Press (August 17, 2006)

Language: English

ISBN-10: 1600961207
ISBN-13: 978-1600961205

Product Dimensions: 8.8 x 6 x 0.7 inches

A deceptively simple story and the shortest of Dumas's most famous novels, The Black Tulip (1850) weaves historical events surrounding a brutal murder into a tale of romantic love.

Set in Holland in 1672, this timeless political allegory draws on the violence and crimes of history, making a case against tyranny and creating a symbol of justice and tolerance: the fateful tulipa negra.

THE MOVIE OF THE MONTH
Director: Christophe Barratier
Writers: Christophe Barratier , Julien Rappeneau, Pierre Philippe
Cast: Gérard Jugnot, Clovis Cornillac, Kad Merad, Nora Arnezeder, Pierre Richard
Plot: It is 1936. Léon Blum is in power, the Socialist Party is active, workers are striking and the weight of the Great Depression is beginning to be felt. When the owner of the local theatre falls behind on a debt, proprietorship passes to the local mob boss. For Pigoil (Gérard Jugnot), a stagehand, this is bad news. His wife has just left him, taking their adorable son Jojo (Maxence Perrin), so when the gangster closes the failing theatre, Pigoil finds himself alone and unemployed. Depressed and running out of money, Pigoil and his friends Milou (Clovis Cornillac), a proud idealist, and Jacky (Kad Merad), a flawed comedian, decide to stand up to the mobster, occupy the theatre and return it to its glory days. But their lineup of amateur cabaret and half-baked comedy looks decidedly lackluster until Douce (Nora Arnezeder), a beautiful young girl from the city, walks into the auditions. Cast as the singing “announcer,” Douce instantly charms the town with her beguiling looks and angelic voice. The Chansonia soon becomes famous all over Paris, but with love triangles, ongoing political tensions, the strain of the Depression and the mob boss's constant swindling, life isn't easy.

EDUCATION
Traditional Masonry Restoration Course
18-25 October 2008, Laslea, Tranylvania, Romania
Image courtesy by www.intbau.org (photo by Aura Neag)
INTBAU Scandinavia (the International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture and Urbanism's Scandinavia Chapter) with the support of EDUAC (the Educational Dissemination and Valorisation within Urbanism, Architecture and Crafts project) is pleased to announce a one week workshop in traditional methods of masonry. The event will take place in the Saxon area of Transylvania, settled in mediaeval times. The architecture is rich and encapsulates the old methods of building, based primarily on lime burning, bricks and wood.
Who should attend? The course is suited for architects, architecture students and antiquarians who wish to learn more about traditional masonry, and for craftsmen who would like to expand their skills within protection and restoration of old brick buildings. The workshop will combine lectures on traditional materials and architecture with masonry practice on a selected site. The participants will work at one of the biggest houses - known as the house number 344 - of the Saxon village of Laslea, which is being restored at the moment.
Fees. The fee for the course will be 200 Euro. The fee covers shared accommodation in the local guest house as described above, all meals, tuition and local transport. Hotel accommodation can be arranged at additional cost. Please note that travel to and from Laslea is not included in the participation fee.
Scholarships. A limited number of student scholarships (for accommodation and meals in Laslea) are available. Please apply to the organisers, with information about your studies.
