NEW YEAR !

ECO-COMPACT CITIES NETWORK
We are glad to announce you that, by following the great success of the Philippe Rotthier European Prize 2008, A VISION OF EUROPE and the FONDATION POUR L'ARCHITECTURE, have decided to launch the:
ECO-COMPACT CITIES NETWORK (ECCN) .
The new ECCN is intended to be a Forum for Municipalities, Developers, Architects, Urbanists, Engineers, and all those who are interested in the designing and creation of true Eco-Compact Cities.
The aim of the ECCN is to exchange ideas, share succesful experiences, and spread the culture of the Eco-Compact City.
The structure of the ECCN is based upon the organization, every year, of:
-
an international conference
- an international exhibition
- the publication of a ECCN Year-Book
Every year one city will take the charge of the organization of the ECCN Forum, and in this occasion, other cities will advance their candidatures to host the next ECCN Forum.
A specific ECCN website will be vreated to allow every member to publish his/her best experiences in the field of designing and building New Eco-Compact Cities.
The first ECCN Forum will be held in Bologna in October 2009 thanks to the collaboration of the University of Ferrara.
We hope that you will join us in the new ECCN Forum and actively participate in the organization of the future ECCN events. More informations will be available soon (contact: civicarch@unife.it).

MASTERPLAN TO REGENERATE BOLOGNA HISTORIC CENTER
Bologna, 2008 December

A Vision of Europe & Civicarch for Ascom Bologna
proiect team:
Gabriele Tagliaventi, Donatella Diolaiti, Alessandro Bucci
with Francesco Finetti, Ivan Pirani, Marco Spiga

The Historic Center is based on neighbourhoods, districts, faubourgs (22)
The masterplan systematically analyzes the main features of commercial spaces in the metropolitan area from a typological and morphological point of view. This operation underlines their fundamental role in the actual process of both architectural re-qualification of historic edifices and urban redevelopment of ill-conceived sub-urban areas, and lead towards the design of an architectural strategy for interventions of re-urbanization based upon the use of the commercial spaces -markets buildings, squares, arcades, etc.- as key elements for the creation of a better urban environment.

CANALETTO. VENEZIA E I SUOI SPLENDORI
CANALETTO: VENICE AND ITS SPLENDOURS
Casa dei Carraresi, Treviso
2008 October 23 - 2009 April 5
Visitors will have the opportunity to see, besides Canaletto’s paintings, other famous artists such as Luca Carlevaijs, Bernardo Bellotto, Francesco Guardi and Michele Marieschi.
First rate painters that belonged to an art movement called ‘ Vedutismo’ (paintings of a cityscape or some other vista) which originated in Flanders, even though it was Venice that eventually became renowned as the centre of this new genre. The art exhibition will feature more than 100 paintings; strikingly beautiful ‘ vedute ‘ that will take your breath away.
This extraordinary exhibition will give you the opportunity to get a deeper insight into Canaletto’s work. A vast selection of his paintings will be on display; from his early works such as Campo San Giacometto; Il Canal Grande dal Palazzo Corner Spinelli and Bacino della Giudecca to his major masterpieces such as the four amazing ‘ vedute ‘ the artist painted for a German merchant called Sigmund Streit.

SOS UNESCO: TOURNAI CATHEDRAL
One Tower Too Many

An international petition against a project to construct a tower hotel within the Unesco precinct of Tournai cathedral.
The international reputation of the city of Tournai in Belgium stems in the main from its famous Cathedral of Our Lady , crowned with five towers and classed in 2000 as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Because of its history and its architectural qualities, this religious edifice containing both Romanesque and Gothic elements is one of the most significant survivals of medieval Europe.
This exceptional monument is presently under threat. An architectural project made public in October 2008, and backed by the municipal authorities of Tournai, envisages the construction in close proximity to the cathedral of a tower in concrete and glass, topped with a glass dome. It is intended that this tower hotel will be 49 metres in height, fully 15 metres taller than the great twelfth-century Romanesque nave of the cathedral itself.

Copyright © 2008 La Tour de Trop - Frédéric Geenens . All rights reserved -www.latourdetrop.be
The construction project profoundly damages the integrity of cityscape surrounding the cathedral. It is in contravention of the prescriptions of the Unesco World Heritage Committee and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (Icomos). Moreover, it is an affront to the sensibilities of the Tournaisiens themselves and the thousands of tourists who come each year to visit the cathedral, which is itself currently being restored .
Together, we must act swiftly to convince the communal authorities of Tournai of their duty to renounce their plans to build the tower. This is the aim of the present petition, in which we ask you to state.
