A Vision of Europe
in collaboration with
CIVICARCH - University of Ferrara
2009 / II

We are glad to announce you that, by following the great success of the Philippe Rotthier European Prize 2008, A VISION OF EUROPE-Bologna and the FONDATION POUR L'ARCHITECTURE-Bruxelles, have decided to launch the:
ECO-COMPACT CITY NETWORK
The new ECCN is intended to be a Forum for Municipalities, Developers, Architects, Urbanists, Engineers, and all those who are interested in the designing and creation of true Eco-Compact Cities all around the world.
The aim of the ECCN is to exchange ideas, share succesful experiences, and spread the culture of the Eco-Compact City.
The structure of the ECCN is based upon the organization, every year, of:
- an international conference
- an international exhibition
- the publication of a ECCN Year-Book
- the update of the ECCN website
Every year one city will take the charge of the organization of the ECCN Forum, and in this occasion, other cities will advance their candidatures to host the next ECCN Forum.
A specific ECCN website will be created to allow every member to publish his/her best experiences in the field of designing and building New Eco-Compact Cities.
The first ECCN Forum will be held in Bologna in Septemberr 2009 thanks to the collaboration of the University of Ferrara-Civicarch Staff.
We hope that you will join us in the new ECCN Forum and actively participate in the organization of the future ECCN events.
Why ECO-COMPACT CITY is more efficient than SPRAWL CITY ?
ECO-COMPACT CITY
vs
SPRAWL CITY
Example: SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain
180.000 inhabitants
Urbanized Area: 2.000 hectares
Mall Surface: 55.000 m2
Retail Surface: 1.370.000 m2
Example: MODENA, Italy
180.000 inhabitants
Urbanized Area: 4.300 hectares
Mall Surface: 1.200.000 m2
Retail Surface: 176.500 m2

BECAUSE:

- it consumes less territory
- it allows a correct density
- it allows small retail to be on street and on square
- it maximizes investment
- it allows the creation of an efficient network of public utilities
- it allows the creation of an efficient public transit system

This 122,000 square foot campus center for the Harvard Business School serves as the on-campus social center for students, faculty, and alumni, providing dining rooms, meeting rooms, lounges, study rooms, an auditorium, and a variety of student services facilities. The building has been carefully sited to build upon and reinforce McKim, Mead & White's 1927 master plan for the campus. The strategically complex plan, with three distinct points of arrival, marks the transition between the historic business school campus which faced north to the Charles River and Cambridge and Harvard University's future growth to the south facing Western Avenue and Boston. Of the building's north-facing entrances, two align axially with

entrances to Aldrich Hall, the school's principal classroom building, to the north, while a third opens onto the Gordon Drive Circle to the west, the principal vehicular access road for visitors arriving on campus. Two more entrances open to the Center's south-facing courtyard and to the parking lots beyond.

With its red brick and limestone exterior and slate roof, the Spangler Center complements the material palette of the existing Business School campus. The gently curving mass of the building follows the original campus's radial plan and completes Aldrich Quadrangle to the north, while two wings extend to the south, enclosing a courtyard.

SMART GROWTH STRATEGY
THE WAY TO GO FROM THE CONTEMPORARY CRISIS
. .
In this age of crisis town planning plays a key role in the process of urban and land transformation. From one side we notice a sad sub-urbanization of central and peripheral areas together with the diffusion of Malls; from the other side we register the increasing success of New Eco-Compact Cities proposing a balanced development of retail, density, efficient public transport, and high quality urban spaces.
The Workshop presents the most innovative experiences of Smart Growth Communities strategy at the different urban scales: the metropolis, the city, the neighbourhood.
/

METRO-STATIONS / LINE 1

Saint Petersburg Metro is the underground railway system in Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast, Russia. It has been open since November 15, 1955.

Formerly known as Leningrad Metro, the system exhibits many typical Soviet designs and features exquisite decorations and artwork making it one of the most attractive and elegant metros in the world.

Due to the city's unique geology, the Saint Petersburg Metro is one of the deepest subway system in the world and the deepest one by the average depth of all stations.

Serving nearly three million passengers daily, it is also the 11th busiest subway system in the world. Saint Petersburg Metro is the unique combination of strong transportation core that services the megacity with 5 million population and exciting architecture's and art's ensemble.

It became excellent addition built into historic image of the City on Neva
Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya Line-1 is the oldest line of the Saint Petersburg Metro, opened in 1955. The original stations are very beautiful and elaborately decorated, especially Avtovo and Narvskaya. The line connects four out of five Saint Petersburg's main railway stations. In 1995, a flooding occurred in a tunnel between Lesnaya and Ploshchad Muzhestva stations and, for nine years, the line was separated into two independent segments (the gap was connected by a shuttle bus route). The line is also the only one to feature shallow stations. The line cuts Saint Petersburg centre on a northeast-southwest axis. In the south its alignment follows the shore of the Gulf of Finland. In the north it extends outside the city limits into the Leningrad oblast (it is the only line to stretch beyond the city boundary). The Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya Line generally coloured red on Metro maps.
