THE PROJECT OF THE MONTH
THE COMMERCIAL PLAZA AT THE CULTURAL VILLAGE, DOHA, QATAR
Hadi Simaan, José Cornelio-da-Silva & Nikos A. Salingaros, 2007
Exhibited at the "New Palladians Exhibition", The Prince's Foundation, London, September 2008
Commissioned by the Royal Family of Qatar, the designers had an explicit brief to refer to the Greco-Roman architectural heritage of the Arab-Islamic World (Petra, Gerasa) that eventually gave rise to early Islamic Architecture (Damascus, Mshatta). An extraordinary example of what can really be done using the Classical form language in a completely innovative manner. Employing a combination of natural and industrial materials, it was created genuine urban spaces that tie this complex together using its pedestrian circulation -- a genuine innovation compared to other comparable building complexes designed today. All of this occurs on the human scale, and yet the coherent complexity of the design gives the impression of it being far larger than 3 storeys tall on the average. Traffic flow was determined by its continuity with existing adjoining urban fabric.

EDUCATION
INTBAU Scandinavia study your of Berlin, Potsdam and Dresden:
Restoration, reconstruction, new traditional architecture and urbanism
8 - 12 September 2010
You are invited to join us for a tour of three historic German cities: Berlin, Potsdam and Dresden. We will explore the ongoing efforts to repair the damages to the cities' heritage caused by war and post-WWII "urban renewal", and re-introduce European urban design and architectural traditions as models for new development. All guiding will be in English.
The programme includes visits to
- 10 Karl Friedrich Schinkel buildings in three cities,
- the Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam,
- the reconstructed Barock Frauenkirche church and sourrounding New Market quarter in Dresden, and
- Patzschke Architects' new classicist mixed-use buildings in downtown Berlin, including the iconic Adlon Hotel.

Who is it for?
Architects, planners, antiquarians, students, journalists, and anybody else interested in European urbanism and architecture as living traditions.
We already have registrated participants from UK, Sweden, India, Iran, Norway and Germany.
