More than 200 people attended the 1st
International Conference at the University of Ferrara on March 6,
2006.
After an introduction by Gabriele Tagliaventi, where the new alternatives to Slab-Urbia have been presented as a real challenge to the entire EU, Maurice Culot has reported on the new urban neighborhoods and towns actually being constructed in France: Plessis-Robinson, Val d'Europe, Coupvray, Hardelot. José Baganha has shown several examples of Urban Renaissance in Portugal, including a new social-housing neighborhood in Lisbon and a mixed-use urban village in Coimbra. Giovanni Fatta has presented the largest operation of Urban Renaissance in Italy: the reconstruction of the historic centre in Palermo, Sicily. More than 200 hectars of urban infill, new urban blocks, new urban piazzas. Finally, Luigi Mollo has shown the new masterplan for the re-urbanization of the social-housing area of Monterusciello, near Pozzuoli, the first intervention of New Urbanism in Southern Italy. An animated panel has concluded the conference with interventions from: Roberto Behar (University of Miami), Maurizio Biolcati (University of Ferrara), Francesco Colamatteo (University of Cagliari), Alberto Corlaita (University of Bologna), Adolfo Cesare Dell'Acqua (University of Bologna), Donatella Diolaiti (University of Ferrara), Claudio Fedozzi (Municipality of Ferrara), Marina Fumo (University of Napoli), Ettore Manno (Municipalità of Parma), Giovanni Tortorici (Politechnic of Bari) |

The Congress taking place at the University's Examination Schools in Oxford, from 3–6 April 2006, will draw together experiences from the worlds of business, science, policy-making and urban communities – the four major stakeholders in Solar Cities. It is a unique opportunity to develop common approaches and policies for sustainable cities. Solar has a major part to play in the post-fossil fuel economy along with other renewable energy sources. For all participants it is a chance for a dialogue on key aspects of reducing carbon emissions. |

The director Friedrich Monroe has
trouble with finishing a silent b&w movie about Lisbon. He calls
his friend, the sound engineer Phillip Winter, for help. As Winter
arrives Lisbon weeks later, Monroe is disappeared but has left the
unfinished film. Winter decides to stay, because he is fascinated
of the city and the Portuguese singer Tersea, and he starts to record
the sound of the film. At the same time Monroe cruises through the
city with a camcorder and tries to catch unseen pictures. Later they
meet and Winter convinces Monroe of finishing the film.
