HOW IT COULD BE...
A NEW MUSEUM FOR THE ARA PACIS AND A PROPER PIAZZA
The projects below aim at presenting the suggestions from some of the worldwide leading architects and urban planners specialised in the field of Urban Renaissance as an alternative to the proposal put forward by modernist architects such as Richard Meier (completed in 2006!), Frank Gehry, Peter Eisemann, Tadao Ando, etc. in 1996. For its relevant historic background the ARA PACIS PIAZZA offers a unique opportunity to address the problems of the restoration and redevelopment of ancient urban centres. For its symbolic values, the redevelopment of the Piazza will constitute a model for future interventions in other Italian historic sites. The area is the result of a huge operation of demolition (1934-37) of the historic blocks and squares which formed the rich urban neighbourhood of the "Rione Campo Marzio", between the Tiber and the Corso avenue. While the first works of demolition occurred in 1870 as part of the works for the creation of the series of boulevards which flank the Tiber from Ponte Milvio to Castel S. Angelo - and the historic Ripetta Harbour disappeared in front of the Church of S. Girolamo degli Schiavoni in order to leave room to the construction of the new Cavour bridge -the most dramatic part of the demolition works started in 1934 within the ambitious project of reconstruction of the ARA PACIS monument and the archaeological restoration of the AUGUSTUS MAUSOLEUM. The reconstruction of the ARA PACIS Monument represent one of the most successful achievements of that age in the cultural field... but today something goes wrong!

The project for the ARA PACIS PIAZZA should present a proposal for
- the New Museum Building for the Ara Pacis, containing a restaurant-café a library specialised on the reconstruction of ancient Roman monuments, and a bookshop;
- the construction of a Monument and a Hospital for the Roman cats;
- the reconstruction of the historic urban fabric around the Augustus Mausoleum;
- the achievement of the Augustus Mausoleum as a permanent building;
- the improvement of the connection between the urban quarter and the Tiber.

GENIUS OF THE
EUROPEAN SQUARE

by

An International Making Cities Livable Publication

240 pages; 80 illustrations / ISBN 0-935824-11-1

One of the greatest inventions of the European city, indeed one could not conceive of most European cities without it, is the central town square or market place. This was a uniquely European invention, intimately connected to the development of democratic and representational self-government… Whether called agora, forum, piazza, plaza, Platz, platea, piata, nám?sti, rynek, trg or market place the main square has been a distinguishing characteristic of European cities in one form or another for over two thousand years. During the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth centuries hundreds of market squares were created as the center of new European cities from Spain to Sweden and from Belgium to Hungary. The medieval market place fostered the development of community, culture and democracy…
